Fresh Meat

Provocative protection - Daring impact wear, 2017

Project’s aesthetics were inspired by Asian combat heritage and childhood’s video game favorite Tekken 3.

Fresh Meat is a deep insight into roller derby athletes physiology and needs. Roller derby is a game all about adrenaline, devotion, provocation and team spirit. It is as well a game of severe injuries and furious athletes.

This project, subtitled as Provocative protection, aims to provide desirable and daring protection gear. It consists of a strong brand identity, set of material experiments and a conceptual pair of impact shorts. Fresh Meat's main purpose is to elevate the hidden, protective underlayer to the outer layer through desiring aesthetics, bold colour concept and re-construction of material technology named as Riot Tissue.

The name of the project derives from the roller derby world, where newbies getting their first hits are referred as Fresh Meat. The project was part of master degree studies at Aalto University.

To make the impact shorts more wearable and flexible, I created Riot Tissue, a re-construction of durable impact foam, which was bonded with vibrant nylon knit. The tailbone piece’s lining features fleshy Fresh Meat print.

I created an array of prints, which were applied to material try-outs. Above sublimation printed elastic bands and a pink patch mock-up.
